capturing wedding stories and love worldwide

Tell us a little about your day…
From the outset a few things were important to James and I, that the wedding was intimate and full of love, that our guests were treated to good wine, good food and a great party. Second to this we grew up in the Blue Mountains and wanted a venue that reflected our love of the area. We were married at Dryridge Estate in the Megalong Valley, a beautiful property where at sunset the cliffs light up in shades of orange. We’d spent the morning in separate houses on the estate with our bridal party and Molly our Cocker Spaniel – who was an important inclusion on our day! James’ uncles was our celebrant and I walked down the aisle to re:Stacks by Bon Iver. When I finally reached James it was such a moment of happiness. It was a clear Autumn day in May and we couldn’t have been more blessed with the weather. After the ceremony our guests were treated to a grazing table at the cellar door, drinks and a jazz trio whilst we had photos taken. After the the guests entered the marquee, we wanted our reception to be a true party and after the bridal party had entered we asked for everyone to be up on the dance floor as we entered, We then entered to Nelly “Hot in Herre” with everyone up on the dance floor, the atmosphere was awesome! After everyone sat down our MC, coach and friend, was in his element. As a surprise for us he started the housekeeping brief, but had organised for my maid of honour and bridesmaid to perform this as though we were on an airplane, they had props and life jackets and all sorts. Everyone was in fits of laughter it was such a lovely touch. (That explains the photos of the life jackets!) To start the night our wedding favours were tiny bottles of Belvedere Vodka, we all toasted to James’ Polish heritage, “Na Zdrowie!” (to good health!). We had a live band which made the night; as all of our guests were dancing and celebrating more bottles of vodka gradually came out! We had a whiskey cart for the whiskey lovers and we made it known we wanted everyone to have a great night, with that organised a bus to get our all of our guests in and to get them home safely so they could dance all night. We loved the idea at Dryridge that the night of the wedding all immediate family could stay on site and we could invite everyone for breakfast the next day! It was a big party; it was visually stunning, full of love and everything we could have hoped for.

What was your fave part or moment from your day?
I think most people who were there that night would agree James’ speech was just incredible, Leading up to the wedding I wasn’t sure why James’ was spending so much time on this speech, however James’ had actually written me a beautiful poem. I was so touched, there wasn’t a dry eye in the marquee. “Today you make me the happiest man alive, I am completely overwhelmed with how amazing you look and I can’t believe how privileged I am you have chosen to be my wife. I am a very fortunate man. And although words cannot full express my love for you, I am going to give it a try. From the day of birth, we have a urge to always chase a dream, From movie stars to flashy cars, but wanting nothing in between, We often ponder and at the same times wonder, what our lives could truly be, If only we caught our wishing stars, like those that sit above this here marquee. Now my dream is not one for money, not for fame and those types of things, However it does involve love, life and the exchanging of two rings, I first realized my dream on a warm Wednesday night; it was one of beauty, One of strength and one of gleaming light. I chased my dream across the seas, feeling the winds of an unknown breeze To places like England, to winter bitten Russia, The home of past Czars, To Egypt and to Africa, hearing hyena laughs under a sky canvas, twinkling of stars. As time passed on I found that I had fallen for my dream, Never one to quite halfway in between, I decided to boost my chances with a rock that would beam. The rock worked a treat and it made my heart beat, When it dawned on me that this dream would almost be complete. So that brings us here today, standing next to my dream in Autumn’s May, My dream so close to coming real I only needed to hear two words to seal the deal, “I Do” she says….. And just like that, like a whips crack, My God my dream came true! For you see Emma my love, my darling,….. My Dream…. Was always you.”

Tell us a little about your day…
We had such a perfect day – I couldn’t fault anything. Waking up to clear blue skies and being married outside in the hinterland was a dream. Having all of our family & friends there and being able to watch everyone enjoy themselves was exactly what we both wanted. There was so many special moments and we loved every minute of it!

What was your fave part or moment from your day?
We both loved being able to greet everyone and mingle at the reception! It was nice to relax and enjoy everyone’s company.

Do you have any words of wisdom or tips for future couples?
Everyone says it- but the day really does go too quickly. I had to keep reminding myself to take everything in and take a breath.

Tell us a little about your day…

Our day was magic! We had been looking forward to celebrating with our closest family and friends for so long and the day could not have turned out more perfectly. We had the most stunning blue skies on a beautiful winters day. Our ceremony was filled with lots of love and laughter, which is exactly what we wanted to calm the nerves. And, our party afterwards was so so fun. Everyone had the best time drinking and dancing and we couldn’t have asked for a better celebration to end our big day!

What was your fave part or moment from your day?

I loved coming back to our reception, as husband and wife, and having all of our nearest and dearest there with the biggest smiles on their faces and ready to kick on with the festivities.

Do you have any words of wisdom or tips for future couples?

My biggest tip is to not get sucked in to all the ‘stuff’ that surrounds wedding planning and stick true to yourselves and your style and what makes you two special. It’s so easy to get carried away with little things and move away from what matters.

We could not recommend Figtree highly enough. We are both not naturals in front of a camera and were worried about our photos being super awkward. But, Dan was the most unbelievable human. He made us feel so relaxed and made the location shoots so much fun. We either didn’t realise we were getting our photos taken, or if we did, he made us feel like supermodels haha!! We were so pleased with how our photos turned out. They have painted our day so perfectly – thanks Figtree!!

Tell us a little about your day…
Our day was perfect. All of our guests were from Sydney or Brisbane so it was so special having everyone together in such a beautiful place for the weekend. We had a cocktail reception for 125 but it felt like such an intimate setting. The venue looked incredible due to the help of so many wonderful suppliers. We had the best day ever!!

What was your fave part or moment from your day?
Walking down the aisle and seeing Dane was such a special moment. SO much planning and stress goes into the day and in that moment feeling like everything was exactly how it should be was something i’ll never forget. Also having our 2 year old daughter there (even though she was terrified of all the people!)

Do you have any words of wisdom or tips for future couples?
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Nobody remembers what napkins you had or which flowers you picked. As long as everyone has a ball that’s all that matters.

Figtree Tips // 5 reasons we love a winter wedding!

As we welcome spring and say goodbye to winter, we thought we’d look back on the last few months at some of the seriously incredible winter wedding days we got to photograph!

Here at Figtree, we really believe that winter is one of the best seasons for weddings, especially in this part of the world! Why? Well, here are 5 of the reasons we love a winter wedding, as well as some of our favourite snaps from this winter season.

1. Weather + sunsets

Fun fact – winter is the driest season of the year! (in our surrounding regions of Byron Bay, Tweed Coast, Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast). Which means it’s a lot less likely to rain on your wedding day. Yay! Instead, we are lucky enough to experience crisp, clear skies and stunning golden sunsets.

2. Oh so romantic

Winter weddings are always just that little bit more romantic. The cooler season is something that can inspire your styling for the day. Think candle filled tablescapes, deep floral tones, dark green foliage, cosy spaces, rich fabrics, and luxe metallic details.

3. No sweat

Let’s be honest, nobody wants to be a sweaty mess on their wedding day! If you are planning an outdoor ceremony, winter is pretty perfect. Your groom and any males attending would definitely appreciate not being sweaty and uncomfortably hot in their suits throughout the ceremony. You also won’t have to worry about makeup sliding down your face 😉

4. Fashionista

We kind of have a thing for winter wedding fashion here at Figtree. Winter is the perfect time of year for elegant and timeless long sleeved lace dresses, or for you to rock a gorgeous embellished gown! One of our favourite trends at the moment also has to be brides in jackets. Whether they’re leather, denim, embroidered with your new surname – they all look amazing and are pretty practical too. Added bonus, you can whip out your jacket at the end of the location shoot to change up your look. Your groom might even want to get into the winter vibes with a velvet bow tie or jacket (yas!).

5. Let’s party

A pretty great benefit to winter weddings is the epic party you will have! When creating a timeline for a winter wedding, your ceremony and everything else starts a little earlier in the day as sunset is around the 5pm mark. Which means your reception formalities also start earlier, giving you more time at the end to let loose on the d-floor. Earlier sunset time = more time to party!

And that’s a wrap! It’s been an incredible season this year and we can’t wait to capture more goodness next time round.
