capturing wedding stories and love worldwide

ADVANTAGES OF A SECOND SHOOTER

Over the past 7 years of shooting we have developed an approach that we think works best, and gets the most out of your wedding photography experience… and that is to secure two amazing photographers for your day. There are so many advantages of having two photographers, and what’s best is that our photography packages include two photographers as a standard inclusion. Bonus!

1. We can capture the bride + groom’s preparations at the same time.
A massive advantage of having two photographers on the day, is that we can be in two places at once. With the majority of weddings, the bride and groom will spend the morning getting ready in separate locations. By having two photographers, it means we can document both the bride + groom’s preparations as they happen.

2. The details of the ceremony set ups get the attention they deserve.
We are lucky enough to photograph weddings at some incredibly stunning locations and beautifully styled venues. The biggest advantage of having that second shooter is that all of those pretty little details that you have agonised over for months will be photographed as a keepsake forever. **Be sure to also provide us with a list of any images that you want captured on the day that relate to your setups and details, so we can make sure that we have it covered**

3. We can nail all of the angles at your ceremony.
During a ceremony, there are so many wonderful moments happening at once. With two photographers we can capture all of those moments and all of the angles. A key example is the moment our bride + groom see each other for the first time down the aisle. Our photographers are always positioned at the front and back of the aisle, capturing both the brides entrance walking down the aisle and the grooms reaction. It has to be one of the best moments of every wedding day.

4. The canapé hour is the hour of power of photography.
At Figtree, we place a huge importance on capturing your guests and family enjoying your special day. After the ceremony, our first photographer will focus on capturing all of your family photos. Our second photographer can then spend this time documenting candid shots of your favourite people sipping on champagne and feasting on canapés. It helps to deliver a well-rounded collection of images of the story of the day.

5. Two photographers, one bridal party.
There are so many benefits with having two photographers on location with you and your bridal party. With a larger bridal party, it can be a little time consuming capturing all combinations and portraits. With two photographers, this isn’t a problem! This means we are taking half the time, getting you back to your party quicker. If you don’t have a bridal party, it means our second shooter can spend a little more time capturing your guests enjoying canapé hour. As well as capturing variations and different angles during your couple shoot.

6. The reception details
Our couples put so much thought and time into creating gorgeous reception spaces. While the first photographer is still on location with the bride + groom, our second photographer can head over to your reception and capture the space and any details before your guests enter to be seated. On the wedding day, you also might not get a chance to see your reception completely set up and ready to go before your guests have filled the space, so its amazing to look back on these detail shots!

Tell us a little about your day…
The days leading up to our wedding were stressful to say the least. Being from Tasmania and getting married in Byron Bay, all of our planning was resting on our shoulders. With the help from family and friends, we were able to pull off an amazing day. The weather even settled to a beautiful summer day. Ewingsdale Hall provided the perfect back drop for a wonderful ceremony and our musician Tom Francis provided the classic Byron setlist. After the formalities, we then moved to the perfectly situated Belongil for our reception, who were a dream to work with and helped us with our dream wedding.

What was your fave part or moment from your day?
It had to be when I first saw Mel walking down the aisle. As soon as the music started I was a mess, and she looked like an absolute goddess in her GLL gown. Also, I cherished the time after all the formalities were done and it was time to party with my wife, family and friends!! I also loved the time spent with our family and friends – time I’ll never forget and always hold close to my heart. Being a destination wedding, we were blessed with an extended holiday with our loved ones, which I recommend highly. It extends your wedding celebrations!

Do you have any words of wisdom or tips for future couples?
It’s cliché, but it really is the truth – make sure you take a moment out with your partner to appreciate the moment. You’ve both put in so much work for this day, its important to step back and enjoy it together. Another tip- don’t sweat the little things. It’s a long build up to your wedding day, don’t stress the “little things” that didn’t go to plan. Everyone is having a great time regardless, the two of you are the only ones with ideals of how the day was meant to go. If something doesn’t go right, remember, its your wedding day, smile. You only do it once!!

Figtree Tips // Hair + Makeup

Getting your hair and makeup done is probably one of the most relaxing and luxurious parts of your wedding day, and we have some tips on how you can pre-plan this so it assists with setting an awesome tone for your entire wedding day. It seems like such a simple component to your wedding day run sheet, but we think that nailing your hair + makeup is one of the major pieces of the wedding puzzle to ensure a smooth and flawless day.

1. Invest in a hair and makeup trial before the big day.
Sounds simple, but we can’t stress enough the importance of meeting with your beauty team and coming up with a solid plan for the wedding day. Not only will having a trial before the wedding day ensure you are 100% happy with your look on the day, but it will probably also be a time-saver in the morning as your bridal team will be able to arrive and know exactly what you want. You can also time your trial with a dress fitting so you can see the final product, and if it all works together. Our tip is to take lots of secret pics on your phone from all different angles, for those times you are second guessing your decisions.

2. Do your research, and book on recommendations and reputation.
While getting a friend to do your hair and makeup might save a few dollars, it may not give you the desired outcome that you are after. our advice – book a wedding professional! There are so many incredible local hair and makeup artists out there (and if you need suggestions from us, just let us know!). It’s definitely worthwhile doing your research and booking a reputable hair/makeup artist with glowing reviews. A wedding professional will know all of the top tips and tricks to ensure flawless long lasting makeup to survive the emotions and the crazy amount of hugs and kisses you will receive throughout the day and into the evening.

3. It’s all about the timing…
No bride wants to be jumping out of the makeup chair 5 minutes before the ceremony and rushing around trying to get dressed. It’s crazy how often this actually happens. Scheduling your hair and makeup times correctly is so important to ensure you have an enjoyable and stress free morning. We usually recommend our brides have all hair and makeup completed at least 1-1.5hrs before departing for the ceremony. Keep in mind, your photographer is likely to depart for the ceremony before you, so this usually allows about 1hr with your photographer to capture the ‘getting dressed’ photos, portraits and any family photos. It also gives you a time buffer in there if you need anything changed at the last minute.

4. Practicality is a must, and will ensure comfort on the day.
As we are based in such a beautiful scenic location, most of our couples choose to have an outdoor wedding, which is awesome! However this does mean that you will be out in the elements and find that some hairstyles might not be appropriate if there is wind or rain. If its a windy day, it might be worth considering putting your hair up or pinning some away from your face. It’s also great to have some powder, concealer, lipstick handy for any touch ups throughout the day. Bridesmaids are awesome for helping out with this. Look at also putting in a 15 minute buffer to your run sheet before your reception starts so you can do any touch ups, or fix any fly away hairs, before being introduced to your party.

Figtree Tips // Advice on finding the perfect accomodation for your wedding day preparations

We want to give you some words of wisdom, and tips on how you can go about setting the tone for your entire wedding day. It’s something that is generally overlooked as an added ‘expense’, but we are here to tell you that it is an investment into the overall vibe of your big day. Your getting ready accommodation is such an important piece of the wedding puzzle, and getting it right will not only have you arriving to your ceremony chilled and zen, but it will also provide you with some beautiful preparation photos.

When looking at accommodation for the morning of your wedding day, these are are go-to tips for our Figtree couples.

1. Book a space that is light, bright and white.
We can’t stress enough how much a beautiful space with streams of natural light, and white walls will instantly make you feel relaxed, fresh and organised. Not to mention it is a photographers dream to have that ‘white wall’ to use for portraits and detail photos. If you end up with a rainy day, at least you know you will have some beautiful spots for photos indoors before you head to your ceremony too.

2. Make sure your space is close to your ceremony location.
There is nothing worse than getting in a car and having to navigate traffic, especially on your wedding day. Pick a location that is close to your ceremony spot, and do a couple of test runs the day before to time the travel.

3. Look for accommodation styles that flow with your wedding day.
There are so many options out there now, from AirBnb to Stayz to Wotif. Research all of the different types of homes and locations, and elect something that suits your vibe and day. If you are having a relaxed, garden wedding look at a modern cottage. If you are having a beach style wedding, look at a beach house with beautiful views.

4. Look at making the space clean and tidy, it will go a long way in setting the tone for the day.
Something as simple as having a clean space, can really effect the look the look of your preparation photos and also set a relaxed tone for your day. It’s best to try and keep the main living area and master bedroom as tidy as possible, as these will be your main ‘getting ready’ areas.

5. Extra people hanging out with you in the morning is fun, but keep a limit on numbers.
When researching accommodation options make sure there is adequate space for everyone who is going to be there on the day. We recommend limiting this to your bridal party and immediate family, or you might like to invite family over once you are dressed for some family photos before the ceremony. Also consider your suppliers on the day and that your hair/makeup artists and photographer have enough room to work comfortably. P.S You can NEVER have enough bathrooms 🙂

6. House vs. Apartment, the space debate.
That brings us to our final tip, if you are tossing up the option of a house or hotel room for your preparations, we would recommend a house. A house is more spacious, giving your bridal party more room to spread out and get comfy. As well as giving your photographer to opportunity to utilise the different rooms and backdrops that a house offers. Having more space is also so beneficial if there is wet weather, as it means we have the room to capture those beautiful portraits without getting wet. A massive bonus if there are any outdoor spaces e.g. a verandah or balcony, garden, courtyard or even a pool area.

Below we have collected some of our favourite accommodation images from our wedding mornings, and quite frankly we think they speak a thousand words.
